About The Park

Millennium Park is a redeveloped 25 acre section of Grant Park all at a cost exceeding $471 million dollars. It is bound by Michigan Avenue, Columbus Drive, East Randolph Street and East Monroe Drive. Planning started in 1996 and finally opened on July 16, 2004.

Grant Park is one of the largest public parks in Chicago. There are many features of the new park, some of which are the BP Bridge which compliments the Jay Pritzker Pavilion with is stainless covering. Another stainless work of art is the "Cloud Gate" sculpture designed by British artist Anish Kapoor.

The park is also home to the McCormick Tribune Ice Skating Rink, Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance and a 300-space, heated indoor bicycle parking facility that has lockers, showers, bike repair and rental.

At the south end is the 2.5 acre Lurie Garden and the 232 foot pool of the Crown Fountain.

 

 

BP Bridge

BP Bridge was design by famed architect Frank Gehry. It is a pedestrian bridge that connects Millennium Park to Daley Bicentennial Plaza to the east crossing Columbus Drive. The winding bridge is 925 feet long and is clad in brushed stainless steel. Its was designed to create an acoustic barrier from the traffic noise below.

Millennium Park BP Bridge
 

Crown Fountain

Crown Fountain, designed by artist Jaume Plensa, contains two 50 foot tall glass block towers at each end of a 232 foot shallow reflecting pool. The faces of over 1,000 Chicagoans are illuminated behind the glass block by hi tech LED video screens. Black granite is submerged beneath the 1/8" deep pool inviting people to walk upon the water. The fountain is on mid-spring thru mid-fall (weather permitting,) while the images are displayed year-round.

Millennium Park - Crown Fountain  
 

Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate on AT&T Plaza was inspired by liquid mercury and is one of the largest of its type in the world. Standing 33ft high, 44ft wide and 66ft long is weighs in at 110 tons. It is constructed of ,what is now seamless, highly polished stainless steel. The surface reflects the city's image in all its glory. The designer wanted to give people the the sense (or impression) that they could touch the sky.

Millennium Park - Cloud Gate Sculpture  
 

Jay Pritzker Pavilion

The Pavilion stands 120 feet high with it's ribbons of brushed stainless steel. The crisscrossing trellis supports the state of the art sound system and is the first of it's kind in the country was designed to mimic the acoustics of an indoor concert hall. The Pritzker Pavilion is home to the Grant Park Music Festival and other free events throughout the year.

Lurie Garden

Designed by Gustafson Guthrie Nichols Ltd., this 2.5 acre perennial garden is located in the south east corner of the park.

Wrigley Square

Wrigley Square and the Millennium Monument is nearly a full size replica of the original peristyle that stood in the same location between 1917 and 1953. Etched at the base of the monument are the names of the generous corporations, foundations and individuals who made monetary contributions for the creation and conservation of Millennium Park. The square and monument were a gift to the city by Wm Wrigley Jr Foundation.
